Spicy Chocolate Margarita

No Cinco De Mayo celebration is complete without a margarita and who am I to stray from this time honored tradition? Margaritas are some of my favorite drinks on the planet. And, although I typically scan the extensive variety of margarita flavors on the menu at my favorite Tex-Mex restaurant I, predictably, always settle for the classic. I love the mix of tart lime juice, sweet Cointreau and, of course, who could forget the Tequila.

But, when I recently came across a recipe for a chocolate margarita, I was intrigued. Could this be the flavor that would steer me away from the classic? Flavors of dark chocolate and cinnamon immediately reminded me of Mexican chocolate while the addition of Cointreau and Tequilla still brought the drink in line with what one would expect from a margarita.

But because I can never leave well enough alone, I took it one step further. To help balance out all the sweetness, I added a touch of cayenne pepper. That’s right, pepper and I’m here to tell you that the combination is dreamy.

The creamy chocolate, warm cinnamon, citrusy Cointreau combined with hints of agave delivered by the Tequila and just a touch of spicy cayenne is, indeed, a decadent treat worthy of a place of honor at a proper Cinco De Mayo celebration. And, shaken simply with a bunch of ice then served in a very large (my preference) glass rimmed in chocolate syrup and chopped chocolate is something that will not leave you disappointed.

The only dilemma that I’m facing now is whether to have this marg with my dinner or dessert. Or both. Any suggestions?
